James Murphy, Kim Gordon, A-Trak and more performing
The Red Bull Music Academy is descending on New York this year and they’ve just unveiled the first round of events in a series which will consist of 34 concerts, club nights and talks that will blend music, culture and art. Performers will include Brian Eno, James Murphy, Kim Gordon, Erykah Badu, Four Tet and more. Be sure to check Red Bull Music Academy page frequently as we’ll be updating it with new events they’re announced.
They’re off to a great start already, highlighted by DFA Records’ 12th Anniversary party which will feature a live set from the mastermind behind LCD Soundsystem (RIP for now) himself, James Murphy. The full lineup has yet to be announced, but it will feature 15 acts from DFA’s storied history and takes place on Saturday May 5 at Grand Prospect Hall.
“Culture Clash” is described as a “unique celebration of sound system culture” and will consist of performances from Max Glazer, A-Trak, Nick Catchdubs, Young Guru and Just Blaze. That one is at Roseland Ballroom on May 9 (on sale 3/4.) Iconic Italian producer Giorgio Morodor will DJ for the very first time as well.
I raved about Knockdown Center the other day, and on May 2nd it will play host to “Drone Activity In Progress,” a loud and abrasive night of experimental drone from the likes of Stephen O’Malley of Sunn O))), Kim Gordon’s new band, Body/Head, Prurient and more. Visuals in this multi-sensory experience come courtesy of the creative minds behind Nuit Blanche. Again, tickets are on sale March 4.
We’ll have more as this develops, but underscoring the entire experience will be Brian Eno’s audio/visual experience, 77 Million Paintings, which will be on display for the month of May in the former location of Cafe Rouge (15 Penn Plaza.) Eno will also host an “illustrated talk” in which he’ll discuss his creative process.
